Launched at the end of 2008, the “Dossier Pharmaceutique” (DP) is an
online file, accessed using the patient’s and pharmacist’s healthcare smart card,
to monitor medication. Some ten million French people have now opted to create a
DP, including 22% of patients aged 60+.
This new and free e-service is made available thanks to the Vitale cards (eHealth French smart card).
When patients visit the pharmacy, their DP is accessed using their personal healthcare smart card along with the pharmacist’s card. The DP shows all medication prescribed or purchased over the previous four months. The system helps to avoid accidents linked to undesirable treatment combinations and facilitates the communication of information regarding certain treatments. In future, it could simplify tracking and recall of different batches of medication and could also be used for vaccination monitoring.
Every day, some 20,000 new DPs are opened and 70% of pharmacies are systematically proposing the service to customers. The DP scheme cost €15 million to set up and aims is to encourage cooperation between different healthcare professionals.
