Sweden
5.5 million
Gemalto has already deployed more than 5.5 million next-generation secure
electronic identity documents in Sweden. Now the Swedish National Police
Board has renewed its five-year agreement with AB Svenska Pass (Gemalto’s
operating company in Sweden) for
travel documents. The contract also
includes the launch of the European Residence Permit.

Morocco
Morocco moves ahead
Morocco
is the first country outside the European Union to issue
new-generation biometric passports that include Extended Access
Control, in accordance with European specifications. Gemalto is
supplying the passports over a three-year period that started in
December 2009. It is providing a complete end-to-end solution, from
the technology needed to gather citizens’ data securely and
efficiently, to training and maintenance.

India. The secure documents help to protect citizens against
identify theft and contain information about the driver’s history
that is expected to help reduce car accidents. With at least 110
million drivers in a population of 1.15 billion, there is the
potential for plenty more licenses to be delivered in the years to
come.

Gemalto Surpasses 25 Million Smart Card Shipments to U.S.
Federal Government
The number of smart card based identity credentials that Gemalto
has now shipped to the US federal government. This total is evenly
split between government identity credentials, used for securing the
identities of federal government employees and military personnel,
and ePassports, used for protecting the personal information of US
citizens traveling abroad.

Portugal
Permits for foreign residents in Portugal
The Portuguese Mint and National Printing Office has started issuing
Gemalto’s Sealys Resident cards, which dramatically improve document
security. By doing so, Portugal is fulfilling the EU recommendation that
all 27 member states roll out electronic European Residence Permits from
this year. The card provides temporary residence entitlement in Portugal
for non-EU citizens for any stay longer than three months. It is
embedded with a contactless chip that securely stores a facial image and
two fingerprints.

Omani ePurse is a world first
Gemalto has achieved a world first by enabling Omani citizens to
activate the ePurse application in their eID card after deployment.
Gemalto supplied BankMuscat and Royal Oman Police with
Coesys ePurse,
its turnkey solution. This includesthe ePurse in the card, the post-issuance
solution to activate the application and the centralized system to manage
the transactions. As a result, Omani citizens and residents can now use
thee Purse to pay various administrative fees, reload prepaid cellphone
subscriptions and makepurchases in a number of large supermarkets.

Kuwait
ID Card for Kuwait
Gemalto is delivering
national ID cards
to Kuwait. The agreement appoints Gemalto to deliver electronic
multi-application ID cards for citizens, with contact and contactless
smart card technologies embedded in them, as well as plastic cards for
foreign residents that implement highly secure printing features. The
national ID card is compulsory for all inhabitants of Kuwait, and the
contactless technology built into the card increases the speed,
convenience and security of identity verification at border crossings.

Australia
Queensland’s drivers get safer licenses
The Australian state of Queensland has chosen Gemalto, together with
plastic card manufacturer Placard, to provide its
Sealys electronic
driving licenses to the Department of Transport and Main Roads. More
than 3 million drivers in Queensland currently hold laminated driver’s
licenses on which personal data is printed. The new cards will
significantly improve the security and privacy of this data by storing
driver information electronically, making the license hard to copy and
counterfeit.

Saudi Arabia
Saudi citizens get new ID cards
The Saudi Arabian National Information Center has awarded Gemalto the
contract to provide
electronic ID cards for the next three years. The ID
card is mandatory for all Saudi citizens aged 15 and over and is valid
for 10 years. They can use it as a travel document and it offers strong
authentication to enable them to prove their identity. The wallet-sized
card features an embedded microprocessor containing information such as
the cardholder’s demographics, facial image and fingerprints.

Belgium
Child protection
As part of the Belgian government’s efforts to protect children,
Gemalto is rolling out its eID solution across the country. In the
future, all Belgian children below the age of 12 will have a
dedicated
eID card with specific features that are intended to increase their
security in emergency situations. In particular, a special hotline
number is printed on the body of the child’s ID card so that their
parents can be alerted as soon as possible in an emergency. It also acts
as an electronic national ID credential, and it can be used on the
Internet for safer access to online chatrooms and to access services
that require identification.
